I would beg you all to open up this PDF page and read pages 18-46 (it's double spaced in Courier New, stop crying). It's the opening statement for the plaintiffs of the Prop 8 trial out in California... Normally I don't talk about politics, it's not my thing unless I'm forced into it (and especially on the topic of marriage - which, for the record, is a word I believe should be reserved only for religious institutions to dole out, not the state). In fact, this is my first time using the "politics" tag, and I don't intend on using it often. But reading the Times every day at work (BORED BORED BORED) has really gotten into my head, and this particular opening statement by Mr Olson is so well-said that it's worth posting about.
Pay close attention, if you will, to the dialogue between the judge and Mr Olson, when it gets into whether the state should be in the business of handing out marriages. That's my favorite part, anyway. :)
Religious beliefs and preferences aside (which I realize is a hefty thing to say), I don't understand why it's so hard to treat everyone equally. I'd gladly sign a petition to make sure EVERYONE, gay/straight/other/whatever, can get civil unions. Myself included. I'll be united/partnered/whatevered by the state, then married in a church, assuming I can find a church that will consent to marry us (I know, easy for ME to say, I plan on marrying someone of the opposite sex).
One little change of phrase - if the so-called "Religious Right" could pull their heads out of their asses long enough to see the sunshine, this country would be a much easier place to live.
